The former Minister for Small Business says, 'the people who know best about business, are actually the people doing business...'
BRITISH BUSINESS BANK OFFERS MORE THAN FINANCE
Anna Soubry, former Minister for Small Business lets us know where to go for business advice
At the moment I get a lot of mixed views about the role of UKTI for example. I meet businesses who can’t sing their praises more strongly, but to be frank I also have a lot of criticism as well. So I think ‘it’s not my area of responsibility.’ I’m not trying to wash my hands of anything or abdicate responsibility, but it is something that our Trade Minister, Lord Maude, is taking very seriously because he wants to make sure that UKTI is absolutely delivering the sort of Rolls Royce service that it should be delivering to all businesses.
But helping small businesses take advantage is something that I’m very keen to make sure we get right and only today I’ve had a meeting with the British Business Bank because I think the role of the British Business Bank isn’t just about helping access to finance. Actually it’s about providing really good services to small businesses by telling them what’s out there, where they can go for more advice.
At the end of the day it’s not the job of government to boss businesses about. Our job is to create the right framework where people can get on and do business, aware that they need advice and encouragement.
We’re there to make sure they get that advice and encouragement not necessarily from government because no disrespect to civil servants but the people who know best about business are actually people who are doing business.
So it’s about getting all these things right. Getting the balances right so that we create the right environment where people are getting the advice and the information and support that they need and I think that’s something I’m really going to make sure we get absolutely right.
