Ed Vaizey MP, former Minister of State for Culture and the Digital Economy, discusses British Creativity and the importance of continued investment in education to keep Britain on top.
British creativity – Britain is very lucky to have well developed sectors in the creative industries. British fashion, architecture and design are recognized around the world as class leading.
British Creativity – the ‘magic dust’ and ‘sparkle’
I think we are very lucky in this country that we have very, very well-developed sectors in the creative industry, so fashion, architecture, design.
I think we are world leading and I think really importantly we’re recognised around the world as being world leading. I think that gives us a really significant competitive advantage because a lot of people can do tech, a lot of people can do the kind of basic stuff that’s needed, and when we’re competing with countries like China, of course it goes without saying they can match us in terms of skills and investment.
But I think where we still have an advantage and where I think perhaps my Chinese colleagues may well be envious of Britain, is that creativity – that magic dust, that sparkle, that sets aside a product from the herd.
We really need to continue to shout about this and invest in it and particularly in education in areas like architecture and fashion.
If you go to London Fashion Week you see that kind of British creativity, British eccentricity that marks us apart, makes us fun, sits at the heart of the fact that London is probably now the world’s most successful city. They’re really, really important to the British economy.
