Tom Thackray, Head of Enterprise Policy at th CBI, talks about how SME's can compete for the best people.
Employing and keeping the best staff – what you need to know
Small enterprises they need to compete.
We’re in a growing economy now and there are skill shortages so you really need to compete to get the type of people that you want.
That can be difficult if you’re not offering the salaries that your FTSE 100, FTSE 250 companies are offering, but you can sell other things as a growing business. The fact that you’re in a dynamic environment, things are fast paced and that you can offer things that perhaps larger companies can’t, like the ability to take on a lot more responsibility at an earlier stage, ability to try new things.
There are things that you can offer. For example, for some companies it works to actually give shares away in your business to the right people so that they really become bought in to the vision that you’ve got. So the company does well, they do well and that can be a useful tool.
