Dr Peter Bloom from The Open University Business School explains why you need to let go
Engaging with your workforce can pay dividends
I think the first thing that SMEs can do is to actually engage with their workforce.
There’s often an idea that when you have a small business that one of the elements is that it’s your business, and that you are the person making decisions. But it’s very important to actually see the different leadership styles that allows you to consult with, deliberate with and really engage with your workforce. That means knowing their motivations, understanding their incentives and also understanding the varieties of skills that they bring to the table.
There is a notion sometimes with traditional leadership paradigms that you will tell them the way to go, or you will decide what they can bring. But actually there’s a different type of leadership which is very much about letting go and opening yourself to possibilities. That involves actually individually and collectively seeing different things that your workforce does and what each of them has that can make your organisation better.
